Why we need a union

By Rona

I was awarded an Erotic Oscar for Sex Worker of the Year at the Sex Maniacs Ball in May this year [2000]. The "flying dick" award now sits proudly on top of the TV in my lounge for all to see.

I have been a sex worker for the past ten years, working as a "masseuse", prostitute, whore or whatever term you wish to use. I prefer whore, which I think has a nice sound to it. I offer a very comprehensive range of sexual services, ranging from hand relief, oral, straight sex and anal sex. Also I cater for some of the more "kinky" fetishes including "water sports" and mild S/M.

I really enjoy my work because I enjoy sex and can earn my living by doing what I do best and enjoy most - isn't that what most of us want? At the same time I feel that I am providing a much needed and valuable service to society.

Men come to me for a variety of reasons:

YOUNG MEN seeking new sexual experiences, when I can offer oral and anal sex and water sports, as well as more conventional sex given in an "instructive" way.

MARRIED MEN seeking the excitement of sex with a "different" woman who can offer sexual acts such as oral or anal which their partners won't provide.

SEX AS A HEALING THERAPY for men who have had traumas or relationship problems.

OLDER MEN who have lost their partners and who are in need of company as much as sex.

In my ten working years, I have probably had over 30,000 clients and given sexual satisfaction and pleasure to them all, helping to solve relationships in some cases and even prevent suicides.

YES, IT IS A PROFESSION - I believe a perfectly respectable profession, and should be viewed as such in the same way as a teacher, accountant or anyone else. I believe that the first step is to obtain recognition for sex workers as legitimate workers in a legitimate industry and profession.

The first move is to form a union and then to press for the same rights as other workers enjoy. Alongside this would be the need to legalise prostitution and change and review all the laws associated with the sex industry thereby raising the status of sex workers so we have the same rights and status as any other citizen.

Why should the fact that I have chosen to work as a prostitute be considered any different from that of being a nurse, which I once was. There should be no social stigma attached. I work in clean comfortable surroundings, have regular medical check-ups and pay taxes like anyone else.

If the status of prostitution were raised by repealing the archaic laws surrounding it, street walking would be eliminated and prostitution could take place in properly controlled establishments, as girls could work in the safety of their own place or flat, as I do, with police consent and protection in pleasant, discrete, hygienic conditions which would be better for both the prostitute and the client.

I realise that not all girls get the same pleasure from the job as I do, although I do know quite a few who do. But even if it's done purely for financial gain, there is no difference between a whore or an employee or company director on that score. Raising the status of sex work to be a legitimate way of earning a living would enable many of the more degrading aspects, such as pimps and drugs to be dealt with more effectively. Girls would be free to make their own decisions about their and we would probably see a better class of highly trained and skilled whores.
